Why I chose to write a fantasy romance series

There have been two moments in my adult life that a book struck a chord with me so deeply that I’ll never forget the feeling.

The first was when reading the Divergent by Veronica Roth. I loved the symbolism of the sociological and economic systems, and the struggle felt by the main character Tris in feeling like she didn’t belong anywhere because she really belonged everywhere. But that’s not what stuck with me. What really tore my heart out was the ending. I won’t spoil anything (Promise!), but I will say it had me wanting to either throw the book across the room in disbelief and rage — or hold it as close to my heart as possible. That moment showed me something: to create such a powerful emotional reaction was a rare talent. One I dreamed of developing myself.

The second moment came when I had Covid for the first time in spring of 2021. I kept seeing one particular book all over my brand new TikTok feed. That book was the ever popular A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. In the week I was home-bound — and slowly dying an incredibly dramatic death — I read the entire series. And just like that, I fell headfirst into the world of fantasy romance.

World building, magic, and tropes (oh my!) — It unlocked something in me. Fantasies gave me a place to escape in a world that was being held together by hopes and prayers. It offered raw, unapologetic emotions. And romance… romance healed me as much as it healed the characters. Fantasy could break my heart and challenge my worldview — but romance stitched me back together. That’s when the idea for The Chaos of a Hunter took root. Over the following months (okay, years), the concept twisted, evolved, and grew into something far more complex than I ever imagined. Each revision brought new ideas, more layers. It became funnier, darker, more emotional. And when I finally sat down to write it, it was as if the characters were just waiting for me — ready to come alive and forge their own path.

The world they built felt real. They introduced questions I didn’t expect:

🗡 What happens when justice becomes revenge?

⚖️ What if everything you were taught was wrong?

🖤 Are villains born, or are they made?

💔 Can love survive anything — and is it enough to make you feel safe?

These are the questions at the heart of my upcoming series.

The journey to get here has been long — and it’s far from over. But by the end of this road, I hope something in my stories speaks to you. I hope you’ll find escape, connection, maybe even healing.

If you would like to see more about The Chaos of a Hunter and other works that are to come, I welcome you to join the chaos and sign up for my email list. There you will find monthly newsletters, exclusive content including character bios and polls, and if you are lucky the occasional baby picture!

Now for your homework! What book or series absolutely destroyed you — and slowly pieced you back together again? I am always looking for book recommendations!

Homework: haven’t found anything yet that’s emotionally wrecked me (fiction that is) but I’m ready.

I love this perspective - reading and writing really are a gateway to other worlds.

Riches to Riches by Ames Mills.

Her whole Abbs Valley series is AMAZING. It is a poly romance which isn't for everyone, but if its not "off the table" it's a great place to start.

Also, really big fan of a new author named Erin Mersey. None of her series are finished yet, but they are amazing! Start with "Origins" or "Please Hate Me"
